The Chamber of Commerce and the Manufacturers Association of the Southern Tier working with the Manufacturing Technology Institute at JCC are driving an initiative to change the perception of manufacturing, titled Dream It Do It. “This initiative is about reaching out to our schools and the general public to communicate the importance of manufacturing and the opportunities available right here in our backyard,” stated Dave Johnson, Industrial Services Coordinator for the Chamber of Commerce and MAST. The effort is having an impact as enrollments are on the rise in manufacturing technology programs at JCC.
“We have had several successful events and now building on that momentum we are taking our message and activities on the road directly into the schools with lean manufacturing events,” stated Johnson.
To date there are 15 Schools that have signed up to participate. The expectation is that by the time we're done, over 500 students will have had the opportunity to learn about lean manufacturing. This is a hands on activity that is engaging for the students and helps them better understand the manufacturing process. In addition the students hear a presentation on the DIDI initiative, the Manufacturing Technology Institute at Jamestown Community College and the programs available to students interested in manufacturing technology.
