Decorating for Christmas can be expensive – especially if you are like me and change your color theme and style each year. Here are some helpful tips for decorating on a budget:
* Shop thrift stores, yard sales and estate sales for inexpensive Christmas finds. Thrift stores and estate sales are great places to find vintage or gently used Christmas items. The key is to shop early – spring and summer are your best bet if you want to find the largest selection of Christmas items.
* Make use of your collections. Christmas is a great time to get out your ironstone, milk glass, cut glass or silver collection. Display them on mantels, shelves, or in groupings with festive greens and decorations. A glass bowl or vase filled with ornaments makes a unique and colorful centerpiece.
* Use items found in nature. Make use of arborvitae, fir tree, sumac, rose hip and holly trimmings. Trimmings make great arrangements and add that splash of Christmas red and green to any decor. If you don’t have bushes/trees that you can trim in your yard ask a neighbor if you could take a few trimmings. Your friendly, local landscaper is another source as they usually have plenty of trimmings that will be discarded.
* Make your own wreath using the trimmed boughs from your Christmas tree.
* Decorate with food. Display bunches of candy canes in vases, red and green apples in bowls, fill clear glass vases with cranberries.
* Make ornaments with items you have in the house. Cut out paper snowflakes, make ornaments out of pipe cleaners, felt, doilies or origami paper, decorate plain glass Christmas ornaments with glue and glitter or pens made especially for writing on glass.
* If you can sew, and have a sewing machine handy, make Christmas stockings out of recycled sweaters.
* Make an advent calendar using baby socks, or a collection of small mittens strung on a ribbon.
* Send used and broken Christmas light strands to http://www.holidayleds.com and receive a coupon for 15% off anything on their site.
