Jamestown, NY – Kids, camp, and summer: they just go together!
The Audubon Center and Sanctuary still has openings in some of their summer day camps, so it’s not too late for your child, grandchild, or another special young person in your life to have an experience they will remember forever.
Children who will enter Pre-K or Kindergarten in the fall attend from 9 am until noon each day. Older children – through high school – attend from 9 am until 3 pm each day. While most of the camps take place exclusively on the Audubon property, a 600-acre wetland preserve with more than five miles of beautifully maintained trails, a few of the special topic camps include some travel in the Audubon van.
Camp is a great way to transition from school to summer. Of the more than 20 camps Audubon is offering, two that still have openings are during the first week, June 29-July 2. Children in grades 3-4 (ages 8-9) can learn about the “Alien Invaders” that have moved into the Sanctuary. Those in grades 5-7 (ages 10-12) can experience “Fish Tales,” learning about fish, fishing, and writing their own tales.
Openings remain in other camps throughout the summer, especially for 10-12 year olds.
Jamestown Audubon has been offering Summer Day Camp programs since 1976. Most camps now are four-day programs providing a wide range of opportunities. All are designed to get children outdoors and to help them feel comfortable in and knowledgable about their surroundings.
With all the research saying that children who spend time outside are healthier, Audubon day camps are a wonderful opportunity. To see the range of offerings and availability of Audubon camps, check the website at www.jacamps.wordpress.com.
Audubon’s education sponsors are the Johnson Foundation, the Jessie Smith Darrah Fund, and the Carnahan-Jackson Foundation.
The Audubon Center and Sanctuary is at 1600 Riverside Road, off Route 62 between Jamestown and Warren. The Center’s building, with a nature store and exhibits of live fish, reptiles, amphibians and more, is open Monday-Saturday 10 am-4:30 pm, Sundays 1-4:30 pm. Its five miles of trails, Bald Eagle viewing, arboretum, and three distinct gardens are open dawn to dusk every day.
